Do you have a pile of scrap fabric sitting in your craft room that you just can’t throw away? Gorgeous pieces of fabric, not quite big enough to make your next project but not small enough to throw away.

I’ll show you how to make a super simple zipper purse to use with your keys, as a coin purse or as a quick gift for your loved ones. The pouch is without lining, what makes it a great sewing idea for beginners. By making one of our cute zipper pouches you can breathe new life into your leftover fabrics.

Follow the lines and shapes of your scraps to create unique patchwork patterns on your zipper pouches every time. Take time to match colors and shapes before starting to sew to make sure your zipper pouches are stylish and modern as well as functional.

Upcycling your fabric scraps into small zipper pouches means that you are doing your bit to help the environment. Upcycling and not adding to landfill means that energy is not wasted producing new fabrics and products. And let’s be honest no one will be able to tell your pouches are made from fabric scraps if you place your fabrics creatively.

What can I use my zipper pouch for?

These small zipper pouches have a range of uses and make great gifts for your friends and family.

Use your pouches as:

  • A make-up bag
  • A coin purse
  • Keep trinkets safe
  • Store headphones
  • Unique mothers day gift
  • Gift idea for friends and family

DIY small coin purse: What kind of fabric should I use?

Essentially you can use any non-stretcg fabric* to create your small zipper pouches but remember to bare in mind the weight of the fabrics you pair together. Try and keep them a similar weight. Don’t pair heavy denim with delicate viscose as your pouch will become misshapen easily.

Cotton* and linen* are good choices of fabric to use as your base, then layer other types of fabric scraps on top to develop your patchwork design.

Supplies

  • 1-3 different fabric scraps in the color of your choice
  • 15 cm long zipper of your choice (My recommendation: non-separating Nylon coil zipper, 3-5mm, can be shorten later on) or a metal zipper (can’t be shorten later on and should fit exactly)
  • thread matching your fabrics
  • Clips or Pins
