Light woven fabrics, such as linen* or muslin are suitable for shorts. Since the fabric requirement is very low, you can also use the pattern to use leftover fabric or for creative upcycling ideas.
There are many ways to sew an elastic waistband. Since this pattern is specifically designed for sewing beginners, the elastic waistband is sewn with the help of a safety pin.. This is a particularly easy way to sew an elastic waistband.
Quick start Guide:
- Sew the waistband together on the short sides with the right sides together and a 1cm (0.3”) seam allowance
- Fold the waistband lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press the folded edge well
- Pin the waistband to the shorts, right sides together. Use clips or fabric pins
- Sew the waistband to the shorts using a straight stitch with a 1cm (0.3”) seam allowance. Leave a small 10cm (4”) opening for the elastic to thread through
- Use a safety pin to pull the elastic through the waistband
- Overlap the two ends of the elastic and secure with a zig-zag stitch (forward and back stitch a few times)
- Close the 10cm (4”) opening of the waistband to the shorts with a straight stitch
- Finish the raw edge of the shorts and the waistband all around with a zigzag stitch
Yeah! Shorts made out of woven fabric (cotton or linen) are a great project for absolute sewing beginners. You will practice the straight and zaig-zag stitch and learn how to sew a simple elastic waistband with a drawstring.
