DIY How To Sew These Must-Have Tailored Summer Shorts
These stylish pair of pleated shorts are a must-have this summer. The high waist cut with wide flared legs makes them super comfortable for everyday use, yet chic enough to wear them to work. The best thing about it: you can easily sew these high waist shorts yourself. All you need is the sewing pattern in your size (linked below), a summer fabric* of your choice and around 3-4 hours of time.
In this post Ill show you how to sew a pair of short tailored trousers (Bermuda shorts) at home. You will learn how to insert a fly front zipper, how to sew side pockets and how to attach the waistband. Overall this is a great challenge for advanced sewing beginners to learn new sewing techniques.

DIY Short Tailored Pants: Supplies & Fabric Suggestion
What you’ll need to make the pants
- Fabric* of your choice
- min. 18 cm long zipper* of your choice (My recommendation: non-separating Nylon coil zipper*, 3-5mm, can be shorten later on)
- 50 cm fusible interlining* to strengthen stress points (zipper fly tabs and waistband)
- Button matching your fabric (size of your choice)
- New universal sewing needles*
- Thread matching your fabric
- Fabric Scissors, fabric pins, iron
Did you know?
The high waist shorts are also available as long tailored pants. The pattern is ideal to sew long linen pants or to make a more classic version as tailored trousers.
Suggested Fabrics
You can use different fabrics for the pants, depending on the look you want to achieve. My recommendation:
- leichter Leinen*
- Leinen*/ Viskose-Mix (knittert weniger als purer Leinen)
- leichte Baumwolle*
- Twill
- Polyesterstoffe*
Remember to wash your fabric before sewing.
If you want to achieve a tailored trousers look, a fine cotton twill (optionally with a slight stretch) or linen fabric is ideal.
